Offers change, and the brand's own page is the final word.

Stated lead times by brand

These are the fourteen brands in our verified data that give a specific number of days. They are sorted from the longest lead time to the shortest.

  • 30 days: AMC Theatres. Your birthday must be on your free AMC Stubs Insider account 30 days before the first day of your birth month.
  • 10 days: Red Lobster. The help text gives a 10-day lead time. The reward itself is issued 7 days before your birthday and is valid for 30 days.
  • 7 days: Benihana. A free Friends With Benefits account, 7 days ahead, for the $50 birthday reward certificate.
  • 7 days: Burger King. The birthday must be set 7 or more days ahead in a free Royal Perks account.
  • 7 days: Chuck E. Cheese. A parent registers a child in the Birthday Club 7 days ahead, and late signup waits until next year.
  • 7 days: Cold Stone Creamery. The reward loads 7 days before your birthday.
  • 7 days: Firehouse Subs. Your qualifying $1 or more purchase must be made at least 7 days before your birthday.
  • 7 days: Starbucks. Join at least 7 days before your birthday.
  • 7 days: The Cheesecake Factory. A Cheesecake Rewards account 7 days ahead.
  • 7 days: Tropical Smoothie Cafe. A Tropic Rewards account with your birthday.
  • 1 day: Chick-fil-A. Add your birthday 24 hours ahead or get the reward next year.
  • 1 day: Dutch Bros. Download the app before your birthday, because an app downloaded on the day loads the reward the next day.
  • 1 day: Jersey Mike's. Opt in to email 24 hours before your birthday or get the reward next year.
  • 1 day: Philz Coffee. The birthday must be entered at least 1 day before.

Most of the verified deals state no number at all. Brands with no stated lead time in our data include Baskin-Robbins, Carvel and Peet's Coffee. That does not mean none exists. It means the brand's page does not say, so check it.

Deadlines tied to a month, not days

A few brands set the deadline against your birth month instead of your birthday.

  • Qdoba: the birthday must be set before the 1st of your birthday month and cannot be changed.
  • Cracker Barrel: your birthday must be on the account before your birth month.
  • Ulta Beauty: the birthday must be on your profile before your birthday month to get the store coupon.

If your birthday is early in a month, this effectively means signing up the month before.

Why the lead time exists, as far as the data supports

The brands do not generally explain their reasoning in the pages we verified, so we will not guess at their internal motives. What the data does show is how the rule works in practice. Four patterns appear.

The reward is issued ahead of time. Cold Stone loads its reward 7 days before your birthday, and Red Lobster issues its reward 7 days before. Joining after that point means missing the start of the window.

The account needs history first. Starbucks requires at least one Star-earning transaction before your birthday each year in addition to joining 7 days ahead. Firehouse Subs requires a purchase of $1 or more at least 7 days before your birthday. Jersey Mike's requires a qualifying purchase in the prior 12 months. In these cases the account needs a record in place before your birthday arrives.

Late entry pushes the reward back. Chick-fil-A and Jersey Mike's both say that if you act late, you get the reward next year. Dutch Bros says an app downloaded on your birthday gets the reward the next day.

Late signups can still get something, sometimes. The Cheesecake Factory says that sign-ups within 7 days of your birthday get the reward on the birthday.

What to do if you are already late

First, check the brand's page, because the late-signup rule differs. At Dutch Bros you may only lose a day. At Chick-fil-A, Jersey Mike's and Chuck E. Cheese the stated penalty is waiting until next year. At The Cheesecake Factory your reward arrives on the birthday itself.

Then plan ahead for next year. Join the accounts for your favorite brands now, enter your birthday, and the lead time will already be met. For family members, the ClaimCake account page can track birthdays and send email reminders. Our birthday freebies calendar planner lays out when to act through the year.
